The History of AHEC
Our History
The Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) Program was developed by Congress in 1971 to recruit, train, and retain a health professions workforce committed to underserved populations. The AHEC Program in Georgia was begun by Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM) in 1984. In 1987, MSM began the Magnolia Coastlands AHEC (formerly CHEP-AHEC), serving 39 counties in central and southeast Georgia.
