Foothills AHEC Clinical Training Program

Our Preceptor Coordinator is responsible for providing quality community-based learning opportunities and clinical experiences for health professions students training within both the rural and urban underserved communities of northeast Georgia. Community-based training gives students a valuable opportunity to experience health care in a real world setting and interact one-on-one with their future patient population in community health centers, county health departments, local practitioner’s offices and many other community primary care sites. Current research has shown that healthcare professions students who have participated in these experiences have a better understanding of the complex needs of underserved populations.

Creating these opportunities involves the recruitment of preceptors (clinical instructors / community-based faculty) and the development of clinical rotation sites which meet the qualifications of each educational program with which we work. It also involves continual coordination between our qualified preceptors and the educational programs and students seeking assistance. Participation in this program offers a unique opportunity for both preceptors and students. Preceptors give back by actively investing in the future quality of health care offered within our local communities, while receiving benefits such as faculty appointment from educational programs. In turn, students benefit from the guidance of dedicated preceptors while having the opportunity to train within communities in which they will consider taking jobs after graduation.

Healthcare providers interested in becoming involved in our preceptorship program and learning more about the benefits of participating can find out more information on our Preceptor Information page.

Students currently enrolled in a health professions program can find out more information about the support we offer on our Student Information page.
